With the wide selection of racquets that are now available it’s almost impossible not to find the one that feels like the right one. There are as many racquets as players are, even though sometimes customization brings the right comfort and performance to an already great product.
You could start by choosing the racquet with the specs that adjust to the way you play (see How to Choose Your Tennis Racquet). Then come the accessories that modify those specs:
Strings: Monofilaments, multifilaments, polyester, synthetic gut or natural gut. Each alone or in a hybrid combination modify the response the racquet has when hitting the ball. What you need to be clear about is what you need from the string whether it’s power, spin, comfort or durability and it’ll all depend on the materials used and the string construction technology.
String Tension: Every racquet has its own recommended tension specs. Ranging from a lower tension value that by rule of thumb brings power to the swing due to the trampoline effect of the string bed. That means you can pass the ball over the net with less effort. On the contrary, increasing string tension gives the player more control over the force applied to the ball and over the directionality of the shot.
Weight Balance: The balance of the racquet can be modified using Lead Tape which is a weighted sticky accessory (therefore a removable and reversible action) you might need to stop by the tennis pro shop to get the rebalancing done with the right tools and by a professional. All the possible outcomes allow you to try different configurations, for instance a head heavy racquet will have power and maneuverability, whereas a head light frame will deliver more control over the shot. The power in this cases has to be delivered by the player.
Comfortability and feel on the handle can be achieved by the type of grip used. Cushioned grips are more comfortable and they help reduce vibrations transferred to the hand of the player. Leather and thin grips on the other hand will give you more feel letting you pace your game with accuracy.
Sweat absorption and grip texture are customized with overgrip tape. Here we can find different options for customization: perforated, smooth or ripped tapes, cushioned tapes, dry or tacky tapes.
This is just an insight of the many personal adjustments you can try on your racquet. Feel free to give us a call or come by our stores to find the professionals who can help you upgrade your game.
