Ten years ago, together with Adidas, Yohji Yamamoto created something that did not exist before and completely projected the future. His desire was and is to make sportswear elegant and chic, ‘adidas is a very personal inspiration to me… it enriches my creative life.’

Why?
Adidas thought for years that it could be amazing to see Y-3 on the sports field. They never found the right project however. Tennis seamed to fit Y-3 and Roland Garros with its long history, combined with Yohji’s love of Paris just made it feel like the right project to introduce Y-3 onto the court.
How?
Immediately they wanted to make a statement. Y-3 is bold, pioneering and confident. Adidas wanted to translate this spirit onto the Tennis court and approached the design to create a look for each athlete. Not to see each item as separate pieces but to use each piece to build attitude and a sense of power for each player. We married the spirit of Yohji with the functional sporting expertise of adidas.
Roland Garros 2016
Y-3 reveals a collection inspired by ‘dazzle camouflage’ or ‘dazzle painting,’ a ship camouflage used in World War I. Its main objective is to make it difficult to estimate a target’s range, speed and heading and it consists of complex patterns of geometrical shapes in contrast colors, interrupting and intersecting each other.
